Haida Argillite Carving
Argillite is a form of black slate found on the North West Island of Haida Gwaii. Carving it is reserved solely to artists of the Haida Nation. The pieces depicted here are all the work of Gary Minaker-Russ (Kiit-Laaghaa). Gary is from the Eagle Clan with Beaver, Sculpin, Frog and Black Whale as his crests.

Octopus and Killer Whale Pendant
A highly detailed carving, 1 3/4 by 1 1/4 inches depicts the Octopus attempting to capture the Killer Whale for his speed and agility. There is no clear winner and the legend suggests that desireing to possess what is not ours can lead to a personal battle of discontement.
